How New Zealand is tackling AI and likeness

The New Zealand Government released its first-ever artificial intelligence (AI) strategy last month. The focus is on becoming a “sophisticated adopter” of AI, rather than a contributor to new foundation models in the space. The strategy takes a “light-touch and principles-based” approach, relying on existing legislation and regulations instead of creating new ones. In addition, it contains practical guidance for businesses.

Generative AI is already making its mark in New Zealand. One example is telecommunications company Skinny, which turned a long-time customer and competition winner, Liz, into an AI-generated brand mascot. With her likeness licensed, Skinny can now create ads and videos featuring her image.
